Projects
I design and manufacture tailored industrial machinery and purpose specific mechanisms to solve the clients needs.
For example, the Bio-press is a plunger-piston mechanism to separate the liquid from moist fibrous material. The solid part is squeezed using compression and cut into small pieces known as “Pellets” or “Briquets”, while the liquid part is collected and accumulated in a reservoir. Cutting and pelletizing die with variable output that allows working with different solid/liquid ratios in the input material and with different fiber characteristics.
Industrial Machines
User-Centered Design applied to social problems:
Design of a constructive system for rainwater harvesting.
Houses built with this constructive system would capture the rainwater that falls onto the roof, to be filtered and chlorinated by the rain-gutter system that leads it into the walls of the house where large flexible water containers are located.
I developed this concept as my master’s in engineering dissertation. It is an idea to relieve the lack of water in Mexico City, while providing low-cost housing with a modular design.
This project encompasses: Low-cost, Self-build, House + water, Made of recycled material, Puzzle-like joints, Designed to be Assembled and Disassembled without crane or special tools, Mexico City building regulations compliant.
Design and manufacture tailored computer interfaces.
For example, The MouseClicker, a mechatronic AT to surrogate physical agency over a computer mouse and to foster the haptic sensory experience of clicking on it tailored specifically for an individual with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) who faces challenges in using a standard mouse due to severe hand motor impairments.
Assistive Technologies and Haptic Interfaces
Real-time multi-variable sensing of the user, the environment and the robot’s inner state; thru parallel processing, and high-precision circuits and mechanisms.
Design and manufacturing of robotized appliances and furniture. I will make your wildest sci-fi dream become true.
For example, this Robotic Desk-Lamp for automatized experimentation with human subjects: correlating sensor-based data of the user (quantitative) with traditional written questionnaire (qualitative) to retrieve user’s opinion. Also, it can be used as an everyday light source, transforming any living space into a robotized room.
My PhD research encompassed: Human Robot Interaction, User Centered Design , User Experience (UX), Human Factors, Big Data, Privacy and Security on-line, Safety, Modular Design, Instrumentation, real-time sensing interface, and short and long term repercussions on human body and mind.
Human-Robot Interaction:
Heuristics: Design of a Flexible Orthosis for Brachial Plexus Paralysis
Brachial plexus paralysis translates as No control over hand muscles nor pain or sensitivity of any kind.
This orthosis design is a novel design that encompasses: User-Centered Design, Bio-mechanics, Human factors, Compliant mechanisms and Heuristic Design.
A $20 USD light-wight Flexible Orthosis with Low-profile gripper mechanism for comfortable daily use. Provides support thru a combination of metal rods and tensile force of the neoprene fabric.
Mechanism designed with polycentric rotation for adaptive grip.
Hi-fi Stereo audio amplifiers.
As part of my interest in robotics I have been working with high-precision electronic circuits due to their usefulness on instrumentation and robot development.
I build high fidelity class A/B stereo audio amplifiers. this specific design presents a twin-circuit design with low noise and low distortion.
Audio amplifiers and instrumentation amplifiers are made to match the client needs: power, number of channels, gain, etc.
Creative restoration of a monumental and mechanized Alebrije
I design and build artistic robots to fulfill the needs of clients for a novel architectural response to space and human emotions.
For example, I was commissioned to restore a monumental alebrije to be displayed in a Mexico City technology fest.
The alebrije was brought to life using a collection of classical art techniques, manufacturing innovation and tons of inspiration.
Mechanical design of a machine for quality control on cowhides
I designed this machine to facilitate optical inspection on cowhides as raw material to assign a quality grade depending on the number of defects found on them. The novel idea is to use multilayer rollers, made of solid material in the center and soft and fibrous material on the outside, in order to press and tense the cowhide to force it into an even plane without damaging it.
Entrepreneurship and design of industrial processes
Entrepreneurship in manufacturing preserved food. I initiated a small dry granola and sweet-apple tee company in 2017. It was closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I offer the design of industrial process, including planning, tech, instrumentation, and work space ergonomics.
